In modern Hebrew, <cite lang=\"he\">\u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05da\u05b0 \u05e0\u05b8\u05e4\u05b0\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d2\u05b4\u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd<\/cite> is used in almost exactly the same way as <cite> sic transit gloria mundi<\/cite>, so I looked up the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Targum\">Targum<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/mechon-mamre.org\/p\/pt\/pt08b01.htm#19\">that verse<\/a>: \u05d0\u05d9\u05db\u05d3\u05d9\u05df \u05d0\u05d9\u05ea\u05e7\u05d8\u05dc\u05d5 \u05d2\u05d9\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05d0.<\/p>\n<p>However, I&#8217;m not quite sure that that works: I think that the ambiguity of \u05e0\u05e4\u05dc\u05d5 in the Hebrew is what allows the expression to be used in wider contexts, but by translating it as \u05d0\u05d9\u05ea\u05e7\u05d8\u05dc\u05d5, &#8220;were killed&#8221;, the Aramaic limits its possible applications. The same is not true of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peshitta\">Peshitta<\/a>, so if we were looking for a Syriac translation I would suggest &#x0710;&#x071d;&#x071f;&#x0722;&#x0710; &#x0722;&#x0726;&#x0720;&#x0718; &#x0713;&#x0722;&#x0712;&#x072a;&#x0710;<\/p>\n<p>Going back to Aramaic, perhaps one could borrow a phrase from the Zohar (I 4a): \u05db\u05dc \u05e2\u05de\u05d5\u05d3\u05d9 \u05e0\u05d4\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9\u05df \u05d3\u05e2\u05dc\u05de\u05d0 \u05ea\u05d9\u05db\u05d5\u05dc \u05d5\u05ea\u05d9\u05d3\u05d5\u05e7.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jim Davila wonders how one would say Sic transit gloria mundi in Aramaic, a challenge that I can&#8217;t resist.
